Information About Portland
Portland Maps is a service of
the city of Portland that enables you to look up information about
specific houses, local businesses, public transportation links,
community improvement projects, crime statistics, and many other facts
about your neighborhood.
PortlandOnline is the
official web site of the city of Portland. Here you can information
about city government, city-sponsored events, and activities available
in Portland.
TriMet, the tri-metropolitan area
public transit service, makes it easy to get around town when your car's
in the shop or you just want someone else to do the driving. Visit the
TriMet site to plan your trip, especially if you're spending time
downtown where the bus and light rail systems are free!
Portland Arts and Culture
Travel Portland, formerly
known as the Portland Oregon Visitors Association, offers a round-up of
art institutions and events in The Rose City.
Portland Art Museum has a
remarkable permanent collection for a mid-sized city and brings in
outstanding traveling exhibits every year.
Portland Center for the Performing Arts
hosts many great performances every year. Check their site to see what's
on tap when you're in town!
Portland Center Stage, which raised
funds to build a beautiful theatre in the old Armory Building, brings
contemporary masterpieces and old favorites to the stage.
ComedySportz Portland is
Portland's best improvisational comedy group. CSz Portland has performed
every weekend since October 1993. The players use your suggestions to
make up scenes and games on the spot and, while their humor is suitable
for all audiences, you'll laugh just as hard as your kids. And your
parents. And your parents' kids.
Other Great Resources
Powell's Books is one of the
premiere bookstores in the United States. The staff of the city
block-sized main store shelves new and used books next to each other, so
be sure to browse through their online catalog and walk the aisles...you
might just find a bargain.
Powell's Technical Books is, to my mind, the best technical-only
bookstore in the United States, beating out Reiter's Books (NW 20th and
K, Washington, DC) in a very close race. If you're a computer
programmer, computer user, mathematician, physicist, forensic scientist,
architect, egghead, nerd, or geek, you can find books to further your
knowledge in your chosen field.
Voodoo Doughnuts takes
doughnut making to the level of performance art. Their irreverent site
pokes fun at themselves and their menu sports a voodoo doll doughnut
packed with strawberry filling.
